Pride – root of anger

Nebuchadnezzar – most powerful person in the world at that time… life falls apart and after he is glad because the most terrible thing in his life was cured.. Pride – spiritual pride.

  • Sleep of pride
  • Heart of pride
  • Outcome of pride
  • Healing of pride

SLEEP – What do we learn?  No matter how accomplished you are or will be or how successful you are and will be,  CONTENTMENT and PROSPEROUS you are or will be… it will never be complete.

People at the top are deeply troubled.  The human soul wants something so big and it will not be satisfied.   Can’t get content, can’t get prosperous, human soul always wants more.

Most of us spend our lives striving to “get there” always wanting more.  Some people do get their and even then they discover they still want more like Nebuchadnezzar.

There is one good version of Pride…  Pride is faith in the idea that God had when he made you.  Bible teaches us that we are not an accident.  We are created by design for a purpose with a promise.  This creates a purpose.  We can have good pride in this.

BAD PRIDE – “I did it by my power for my glory.”

Pride looks at life with ENTITLEMENT.  I am owed these good things.

Pride in a good life…. I get all this good stuff because I work hard and I am smart.   I am a hard worker I am entitled to…  I am smart, I am entitled to….  I am good, I am entitled to…

Pride in a bad life…  I am suffering more than others.  Things are not fair.  I am owed something better.  I am entitled to more.   I am owed more than what I got.    I am owed more than what I have got.

Pride is cosmic plagiarism.    Pride is that which claims to be the author of what is really a gift.   Pride is looking at your life, and claiming to be the author of your life when REALLY your life is a gift.  Pride is a form of cosmic plagerism.   “I wrote it, I composed it, I did it.”

Humility says – it is all a gift.  I do not deserve it.  It is a gift.  If God gave me what I deserve, I would be lost.

  • Humility is that life that receives life as a gift.
  • Humility is not low self-esteem

FALSE Humility – Says I am a bad person so I do not deserve it.  False humility makes you hate life.

FALSE Humility – Says I do not deserve it so I do not want it.   I do not want friends, I do not want joy, …. This false humility is a reverse PRIDE.   What false humility is saying is “I should earn it.”, ” I want to earn it”,  “I will not take it because I have not earned it”,   deep underneath it, there is still a sence of “I am owed it”.  There will be an excuse.  People with false humility hate life.  The sign of false humility is depression.  The sign of true humility is joy.

Humility says:  I could not possibly merit the good things God has given me.  My health my mind my friends.  Every day is a surprise.  Each day is better than I thought.  What I do have is all mercy.  Every day is a surprise.  Each day is free.   Each day is undeserved.

What is bad about pride?

  • We are stealing the glory of our life from God.
  • We are stealing authorship from the author.

Pride says “I am not dependant on other things.”  But in reality we are.  We are dependant on the following things…  BUT more importantly did I have the power to CHOOSE…. earth we walk on, the century we were born in, our parents – relationship and genetics, our friends, our government, our schools, our co-workers, our government structure, our opportunities.  think about it… how much of who and what you are really under your control?  HOW MUCH of that do I control?

I had nothing to do and control in the above list…

Reality is you say “I have worked hard.”  But with what?  You worked with your mind, talents, abilities, friends, coworkers, connections that GOD and God alone gave you.

Paul says humility is — 1 Corinthians 4:6-7 I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers,[a] that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another. For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?

Do not take pride in one man over another for what differentiates you from anyone else?  What do you have that you did not receive as a gift.

A joyous life is that which receives everything as a gift and a self-absorbed and miserable life looks at life as “I am owed this”.

Pride defaces your humanity.  Like Nebuchadnezzar we become an animal.  We fight like beasts to get what we are owed.   To get our entitlement.  We get turned into an animal.

Pride makes is like an animal… INCAPABLE to empathise with one another.   Animals cannot image what it is like to be in the situation of the other.   You are NEVER more human than when you are able to sense what the other feels.

PRIDE is a way to justify to yourself the control you have over your life.  I deserve this and I am owed this.   Pride makes you so miserable because you are so absorbed by yourself that you cannot even notice others weeping in the corners.   Pride makes you like an animal, driven by instincts for more.

We run from people who threaten us.

People who hate people that brag the most are the most prideful people.   Pride makes us like an animal driven by animal instincts.

Pride robs us of joy.  Animals cannot have joy in their tribulations.  Animals cannot rise above their problems.  Humans can have joy in tribulation.

Pride sucks all the joy out of your life.  If things go right, you say “it is about time” I was owed it.  If things go right you say “I don’t deserve this”,  “why me”?

So much of our problems come from pride.  LOSS of sleep because we are snubbed.

The ONLY thing that will heal you of pride is seeing 2 things together:

  1. The only thing we DESERVE is judgement by God
  2. See I am already the object of the greatest mercy of God

Must must must see these 2 things together to be healed.

When bad things happen we can see it one of 2 ways:  When the stroke comes in it can either humble us or harden us.

  1. We can receive the tribulation in PRIDE and say to ourselves “I do not deserve this” – God you suck.  (Hardened heart)
  2. We can receive it the tribulation in humbling.  This shows me who I am and shows me my fragility.  1) humbles me  2) recognize that God gave it all in mercy and love by grace.

In our pride we try to be more than meer humans.  Christ was marred to beyond human likeness.

Isaiah 52:13-15

He Was Pierced for Our Transgressions

13 Behold, my servant shall act wisely;[a]
he shall be high and lifted up,
    and shall be exalted.
14 As many were astonished at you—
his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance,
and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—
15 so shall he sprinkle[b] many nations;
    kings shall shut their mouths because of him;
for that which has not been told them they see,
and that which they have not heard they understand.

There is an ASSUMPTION in our modern world that says the WORLD is much worse than we deserve…. PROVE THAT TO ME.     The world is ACTUALLY much better than we deserve.

Remember the oppressed, remember the poor, LOVE GOD first Love your neighbour.

Biblical idea of Tithing… 2 ways to look at it.  (World vision)

  1. God is taking 10% of everything I worked for.
  2. God gave me 100% and only wants 10% back on the loan.  I can keep 90% for free!

God is the author of my life.  I am a piece of art by the greatest creator in the universe.  Artists love their art and that is how God looks at me.

Daniel 4:37  —  37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are right and his ways are just; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble.

Anger & Belief

The cost associated with Anger is broken relationships.

The purpose of anger is to recalibrate the other person so they will not repeat what they did.

The people who are most angry are the people who are most entitled.  1) large men  2) physically attractive women 3) rich  4) powerful (politicians – Donald Trump)   4) poor rich white americans (big group mentatility… we are the 99%) – feel entitled.  (strength in numbers)

If you are never angry, others will treat you badly and that will never change.

Why do we get angry:

  • “I am the type of guy that wants to do everything I can to make things go the way I want them to go.”
  • “I want to try to control events”
  • Hypothalimus, pituitary gland, adrenal gland – all triggered in cascade chemicals
    • sends blood to extremities
    • sends stimulant that gives energy
    • drives fight of flight
  • sometimes related to impulse control
  • have the belief that they can control others, or believe they can make the rest of the world behave according to their plan
    • “if they say that to me one more time I am going to let them have it”
    • also feeding into belief that they are helpless “I cannot take this any more” which actually fuels Anger

What does anger do:

  • Anger damages relationships
  • Anger (chronic anger) can cause health issues because of back chemicals in body all the time.
  • Anger (chronic anger) can cause sleep issues (adrenaline)
  • BIG PROBLEM with group of angry people that do not stop being angry after 2-3 minutes.  These are people that:
    • Stay angry all day
    • Plot revenge against driver
    • Become cynical and hostile – brooding anger.  These people say:
      • “No one does anything unless it is in their best interest”
      • “No one can be trusted”
      • These people NEVER feels safe.  They go through life constantly in fear.
    • Cortisole – chemical released
      • get sick
      • stress hormone
      • The stress hormone, cortisol, is public health enemy number one. Scientists have known for years that elevated cortisol levels: interfere with learning and memory, lower immune function and bone density, increase weight gain, blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease… The list goes on and on.

How to deal with Anger – be better

  • ASK yourself – “How can I make this situation better?”  ( big picture)  — you will feel much more EMPOWERED and much less likely to be angry.
  • Neurons that fire together wire together.
    • WHAT ever you do in response to a feeling, if you do that repeditively – it gets HARD WIRED into the brain.  (We change the brain).  Groved – default action…
      • Example – hit walls… if we start to hit walls when we get angry, and we do it a lot, hitting walls becomes an automatic response every time we get angry.
    • Literally it is about building up (practicing) good habits.
      • 2 part process
        1. Ability to calm yourself down faster
        2. Have something to do when you are aroused that is helpful and not harmfil (pushups, take a walk)  — deep  breaths

Lords Prayer 1

3 things God will not allow us to have “for ever and ever –

Lords Prayer says:

  • Yours is the kingdom
  • Yours is the power
  • Yours is the glory

Many people today – no acknowledgement of devine glory.

Many people in this world are:  Building their own kingdom by their own power for their own glory.

This is called the spirit of the antichrist.  This is against God.  It conflicts with God’s plan for the best possible world.  It is a “take” mentality and world vision that causes suffering to others. God does not love sin – things that tear at God’s perfect plan.

Matthew 6:9-13

The Model Prayer

“Therefore, you should pray like this:

Our Father in heaven,
Your name be honored as holy.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.[a]
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And do not bring us into[b] temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.[c]
[For Yours is the kingdom and the power
and the glory forever. Amen.][d]

Character is what we do when no one is watching.

Character – a lost english word.

character noun – the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.

courage noun  – the ability to do something that frightens one – strength in the face of pain or grief.
It is not supposed to be that hard.  How do you _____________.    How do you walk through stuff like that?  I will tell you how. You walk through it by the presense of God.   When you walk through those dark hours of life you have got to have the presense of God.  Christianity is not a religion.  Christianity is a relationship with God.  Christianity is a relation ship with God that is real.  Christianity is walking with God in the presense of God in times like that.   In times like that you worship.  In times like that you pray.  In times like that you hang on to the God that you know is good.  Sing because when you sing to God he comes.  Pray because when you pray to God he comes.  Worship because when you worship God he comes.  In time when you cannot help yourself pray and worship because He comes.   I do not worship only worship when everything is going great.  When Jesus breaks in everything changes.  There is something better than breaking out… That is breaking free.
Where are you going to run?  Are you going to run back to what put you in bondage, in jail, in servitude in the first place?
John 6:68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,
Freedom can NEVER be defined only by the removing of chains and the opening of doors.     Freedom can only be defined by this ” The spirit of God”.

2 Corinthians 3:17  Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

I want you to know that freedom.  I want you to know God.

If your breathing God is not finished with you.  No matter what you are walking through there is hope.  There is Grace.  Maybe your choices are separating you from God but there is hope.   God is ready to break into your situation.  God wants you back.  God wants your back in the right relationship with him.
