Suffering is the dirt to grow love and joy

  1.  Can transform suffering and sorrow
  2. misplaced anger because people are in incredible pain
  3. it is about softening your heart
  4. We suffer because of our wrong perception of ourselves and others.
  5. Our wrong perception is what makes communication so difficult.
  6. Violence in our families and the rest of the world can stop with us.
  7. We must question our own actions and perceptions.
  8. Foregiveness comes from looking deeply and understanding
  9. Attention to the present moment – a way of life.  Not a belief.
  10. Only understanding and compassion can help us remove violence and hate
  11. Restoring communication is the basic requirement for peace
  12. If there no communicaiton, there is no understanding, there is no chance for the best possible decision.

We loose sight of the beauty, the most beautiful things I look back on in my life are coming out from under things I did not know I could get out from underneath.

The moments I look back in my life and think “those are the moments that made me” were moments of struggle.

In a culture where we want to fix or prevent vulnerability — our struggles make us who we are.    Shame to strong sense of worthyness.  Vulnerability between men and women.

Extreme Biblical Relationship

Timothy Keller

Hope, Race and Power April 25, 2004 “Living in Hope”  Romans 14:1-3, 14-15:7

25 min… “YOU will NEVER know Jesus without it.”

27 min… “Vs 15 one and two…  It says do this with your neighbour…  Difference between a “brother and sister” and a “neighbor”  is someone who does not have the same belief in Christ.

Glorifying God begins with relationship

  1. The goal of Glorifying God – 1 Timothy 1:5 “Now the goal of our instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. “
  2. What pleases God?  1 Timothy 2:1-4 ”

First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Why did Jesus come? “1 Tim 1:15 — . 15 This saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them.”

3. What is the mystery of Godliness?   1 Tim 4:16  ” . 16 And most certainly, the mystery of godliness is great: He[h] was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. ”

4.   God’s plan is the best possible life…   1 Tim 4:8 ”

for the training of the body has a limited benefit,
but godliness is beneficial in every way,
since it holds promise for the present life
and also for the life to come.””

5.  The bible tells us what the world looks like when people do not believe in God…  2 Tim 3:1-5  “But know this: Difficult times will come in the last days. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, without love for what is good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to the form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid these people!”

The Power of the Other

The Power of the Other (Dr. Henry Cloud) psychologist

“Reach outside yourself and get some help.”

God says that if we own our vulnerability and we ask for some help (relationship) he will help us.

My plan will fail if my plan is all about me.

  1. it needs to get to my heart
  2. I need God’s help
  3. I need my neighbours help (wife, mentor, friend)  someone who will say “we have all been there”

Sometimes, (1st corinthians), Paul was depressed.  God who comforts the depressed sent Titus to me.”

SELF HELP is an oxymoron…  mutually exclusive

SELF MADE MAN – NO you are not.  NO SUCH THING.  If you think you are the source for yourself, hold your breath, see what happens.   If you were put on the moon in your underpants… reproduce what you have where you are now.

ASK, where are you inside, where are you in your life.  Only 4 places:

  1. corner (1) NO connection (Issolation) – not connecting with anyone.  There may be people around them but they are not connected.  Couple in the room but no connection. (woundedness, hurt, pride, defensiveness – alone in relationship)  symptoms are – loneliness, depressed, no meaning in life, no joy, no energy – crummy place to live.
  2. corner (2) BAD connection (Shame) – might be a good relationship/connection or a bad realtionship/connection – nature of the connection “you end up feeling bad about yourself in some way.”  not good enough, inferrior, some expectation that you cannot ever meet, no matter how hard you try you end up experiencing:  shame, guilt, inferriority, badness, just wish I could be better, never can quite get there.  I just cannot be good enough.  what ends up happening… go back to corner (1)
  3. corner (3) FAKE GOOD connection- we go to corner 3 because we want to feel good.  We medicate ourselves. Feels good for a minute.  Sugar, drugs, porn, next quarters numbers, computer games, kids success in sports/music, sex relationship, adultery,
  4. corner (4) REAL CONNECTION – this is where we get fueled.

Be intentional and aware of where we are at any given time…  Where am I now?  Which corner am I in?

ultimately we need help to come from the outside

  1. God
  2. Mentors
  3. Friends

  1. Medicate – temporary fix, alcohol, drugs, sugar, win games, win quarterly revenue,
  2. asdf –
  3. asdf –
  4.  Corner 4 – God, help me

Bible says we have the best possible life 1) relationship (love) with God and 2) relationship (love) with neighbor.  Scienctific evidence this is true:

  • Babies with no touch  after birth have higher death rates
  • Babies/children  (no bonding) with no touch and no communication have under developed brains
  • Kids with behavior problems often have grown up in environments with poor relationships.  Studies of their brains show smaller brains and sections of the brain are just missing a bunch of connections.
  • Teens in relationship have lower suicide rates
  • Most people going for assisted suicide are lonely
  • Old people in good relationship have lower rate of heart attacks and strokes
  • Old people in good relationship live longer

Need to process pain and go through stuff together.  Need relationship.

FROM the second we came into the world, we were searching for connection.  Baby born, cries, looks for mom.   Need connection from moment we were born to death.

LIGHT BULB MOMENT!!! – Glorifying God (love/relationship) is for Gods glory,  AND it also helps others AND! it helps ME.  This is why glorifying God is in my best interest.

2 Corinthians 7:5-10  GOD COMFORTS the depressed by sending people (relationship/love)

In fact, when we came into Macedonia, we[a] had no rest. Instead, we were troubled in every way: conflicts on the outside, fears inside. 6 But God, who comforts the humble, comforted us by the arrival of Titus, and not only by his arrival, but also by the comfort he received from you. He told us about your deep longing, your sorrow,[b] and your zealfor me, so that I rejoiced even more. For even if I grieved you with my letter, I do not regret it—even though I did regret it since I saw that the letter grieved you, yet only for a little while. Now I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because your grief led to repentance. For you were grieved as God willed, so that you didn’t experience any loss from us. 10 For godly grief produces a repentance not to be regretted and leading to salvation, but worldly grief produces death.

1 Peter 4:7-11

The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Terrified People make TERRIBLE decisions.  Terror and fear make you irresponsible, they make you think not very clearly, make you willing to do almost everything to get rid of the awful feeling.   We have seen people do this on the individual level, cultural level and we have seen politicians who find ways to exploit terror and fear in order to get power.  If you can find a way to get control the reins of people’s fear you can control them for a while.

Must stay more curious than fear.  Our courage makes other people more brave to come out of their houses.

A Brief for the Defense

Sorrow everywhere. Slaughter everywhere. If babies
are not starving someplace, they are starving
somewhere else. With flies in their nostrils.
But we enjoy our lives because that’s what God wants.
Otherwise the mornings before summer dawn would not
be made so fine. The Bengal tiger would not
be fashioned so miraculously well. The poor women
at the fountain are laughing together between
the suffering they have known and the awfulness
in their future, smiling and laughing while somebody
in the village is very sick. There is laughter
every day in the terrible streets of Calcutta,
and the women laugh in the cages of Bombay.
If we deny our happiness, resist our satisfaction,
we lessen the importance of their deprivation.
We must risk delight. We can do without pleasure,
but not delight. Not enjoyment. We must have
the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless
furnace of this world. To make injustice the only
measure of our attention is to praise the Devil.
If the locomotive of the Lord runs us down,
we should give thanks that the end had magnitude.
We must admit there will be music despite everything.
We stand at the prow again of a small ship
anchored late at night in the tiny port
looking over to the sleeping island: the waterfront
is three shuttered cafés and one naked light burning.
To hear the faint sound of oars in the silence as a rowboat
comes slowly out and then goes back is truly worth
all the years of sorrow that are to come.”

Tools to equip me to love better and relationship better

The bible calls us to love others – wife, kids, family, co-workers, community – if I can recognize other’s love style and work to move mine to “Secure attachment style” I will be better equiped to love others.

  • Secure attachment style  — strive for this style – this is how heart should be developed.   Attachment.
    • Decent sence of self
      • have self worth
      • worthy of getting help
    • Get “relief” from relationships
    • Christ is our model of what the secure attachment model looks like
    • It feels comfortable to be next to “you” –

4 broken love styles.  Wounded attachment styles. AKA coping methods to survive in our “growing up” environment.  These are stress responses.

  • Vascilator love style
    • from family background with parents attention changing randomly from “I see you and I give you attention” to “I go dark, I do not see you”
    • scar/groove on heart is huge desire for connection
    • intense desire for perpetual connection
    • desire a connection (perpetual) that NEVER goes away
    • Why did you do that, why did you make me feel that way
    • Bright/Dark
  • Avoider love style
  • Pleaser love style
    • do not have a strong sense of self
    • do not have a stong sense of opinion
    • have weak boundaries – overbooked
    • do not have a stong sense of the ability to say no
    • do not tend to get angry
    • pleasers need closeness in order to feel ok
    • pleasers need others to feel ok.  they need to see a smile on someone else to feel ok
    • When they ask “how are you” they are really seeking validation
  • Chaotic love style (controller, victim)
    • from home with unpredictability
    • Person does not know they are safe
    • Parent could be abusive, dangerous, neglectful, harmful, so addicted, or mentally unhealthy
    • from home where parent is supposed to provide predictability, safety
    • child does not know what is predictable
    • child is in a frightened state without solutions
    • Child will move into one of 2 modes.
        • child takes over and takes control of environement so they can predict their world
        • high levels of rigidity
        • you had better do what I say so that you will not do something that I do not like
        • have very little sense of self
        • little sense of boundaries
        • trouble to stand up for themselves and say NO
        • they have already learned to tolerate the untolerable

God shares his word through friendship.

God shares his word through friendship.  Building authentic biblical friendships is the first step to glorifying God in relationship and bringing all people back to him.  Concentric circles – wife, kids, family, church, community, city, province, country, continent, world.

following is motivated from Krista Tippett, Becoming Wise, #17 with John Lewis, “We are the beloved community”

God is outside of time.  The beginning and the end.  The beloved community is already a reality.  The true reality.  We just need to embody it.  Change my perspective and world vision to see reality biblically through God’s lens.  It is already done (from God’s perspective)  the kingdom of heaven is here and we need to live in this reality that we are already in that community, one house, it is already there.

In every human being there is a spark of the divine. We are all created in the image of God.  So from a moral perspective, I do not have a “right” as in me, I do not have a right, to abuse the spark of the divine in that human, any human.  Remember, years ago that person was an innocent baby.  Empathy, what is their story, what lead them here, appeal to the goodness in the person.  Never give up.  Persistence.  Patient.  The love is there.  The spark of the divine is there.  I am an artist painting my way through the scars and gouges on their hearts.  I am called by God to be a partner with them painting their story on the canvas of time bringing them back to God, the source of the spark of the divine.

Faith is trust, assurance and confidence in someone or something.  The opposite of faith is: disloyalty, dishonesty, distrust, doubt, lying, treachery, uncertainty, misgiving, rejection, skepticism, suspicion, unbelief in someone or something. (googled list from antonyms for faith)

For me (not from anyone one else) the opposite of Faith is fear.  A lack of peace and confidence and trust in the future.  Uncertanty.  And, I can see this in the expression of emotions in other people.  If they are angry, they are fearful because they have not faith/certainty in a good future.
