You Always Made Me Feel Like the Most Important Person in the Room.

  1. Listen
  2. Listen actively – interactively
    • body language – you tend to be physically close to people you love and physically distant with strangers. So choose to be physically close.
    • face expressions
    • laugh
    • ask – how did that make you feel
    • fun interjections
    • listen with your eyes
    • full attention
    • don’t JUDGE
    • don’t answer questions that they did not ask
    • don’t give advice that was not asked for
    • choose to be genuinely interested to know what that person means/thinks/believes from their unique perspective.
  3. Ask questions
    1. who
    2. what
    3. where
    4. when
    5. why
    6. how
  4. Use their name
    • how you say a person’s name (the tone of your voice) matters.  You can make a person feel like royalty by the way you say their name.
  5. Give them your undivided attention. Focus the entirety of your energy on them. Don’t even think about looking at your watch or checking your phone. Don’t worry about having to be somewhere or fret about that work you really have to do.
