Heart – growing the best possible heart in my kids

“When you think it, when you write it, when you memorize it, when you pray it,  it plants a tree in your heart.”

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)   Above all else, guard your heart,  for everything you do flows from it.

Proverbs 4:23 (ESV) Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

Matthew 5:8   Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Out of a kids heart flows their thoughts, words and actions.   These 3 determine their emotions.   Emotions are the essence of who we are.   Our emotions/feelings fuel our energy and our decisions.

Emotions are at the core of our problems and they galvanize us into action, positive or negative. We are our feelings at every stage of our lives. They inform us of who we are, optimistic, hopeful, depressed or sad. Emotions give us value and meaning to our existence, our relationships, our dreams and aspirations.

Matthew 9:4  But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?

My kids will write things on their hearts every day (whether we like it or not).   As a parent I can guide them to write certain things on their heart.

4 messages that cause the most damage on a kids hearts – I must guide them away from writing these things on their hearts.

  1. Pride – damages relationships with other kids
  2. Seeking/loving  things of the world more than God
  3. Seeking MY pleasure, fun, excitement and entertainment more than loving people
  4. Complaining and seeing difficulties as something to be avoided and bad.

Jesus has over 100 commands – which can be fit into 4 principles to write on our kids hearts.  Write good thoughts on their hearts.   Kids to memorize  (Say it 7-12 times per day and it will change your heart).

1—PRIDE – antidote – Grace to the humble – blessed are the poor in spirit

Proverbs 22:4 (ESV) The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honour and life.

Gary Smalley – Humility is fearing the Lord.  Awe and trembling in front of the almighty God.  The wages or humility are riches, honour and abundant life. Who does not want this?  But God only gives it to the humble.

James 4:6  (ESV) But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

2—LOVE OF THE WORLD – antidote – Love the Lord your God with all your heart and strength

Matthew 22:37  (ESV)  37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9  (ESV) “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.  You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as front lets between your eyes. You shall write them on the door posts of your house and on your gates.  (MOSES said this)

Ask my kids what the greatest thing in the world, the best thing to do every day?  Honour God, honour others and honour God’s creation.

John 15:7-12 (ESV)  If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.  By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.  As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.  If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.  “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

“your joy may be full” – MAXIMUM HAPPINESS!!! – I want my kids to be maximally happy.

3—LOVE MYSELF (self centred) – antidote – Love others in the same way you love yourself.

” Mom is making me so unhappy….”  She is not “making” you anything.  She is just revealing the colour of your heart.

If you want to be happy – that is your problem, that is your responsibility.   You do not blame your mother.  You have a belief in your heart that is lying to you.  That belief incorrectly telling you that trials are bad. This belief telling you that your mother is bad.  That is a lie.  Do you want to change your heart so you are happy in trails?  You can change what is written on your heart (change your belief) starting with memorizing 5 verses.

James 1:19-20  (ESV) Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

Philippians 4:6-9  (ESV)  do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

THINK!!!! THINK on these things….Analyse… is this thing  “true?, honourable?, just?, pure?, lovely?, commendable?, excellent?”

**The love of God is poured into your heart through your difficulties and suffering.  The more difficulties and more suffering the more opportunity you have for the love of God to be poured into your heart.

Romans 5:3-5 (ESV)  Not only that, but we rejoice (boast) in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Through your difficulties you get more endurance, character, hope and most all more of God’s love.

4—“Difficulties/Trials are bad” – antidote – make a choice to be grateful

Matthew 5:10-11 (ESV)  “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

Jesus will bless us and give us more of the kingdom and extra double bonus, more treasure in heaven.

Through everything – we pray a thank you.  Because those trials will result in us getting more of the kingdom here and in heaven.

In some cases with really big trials, we will not be able to thank God right away but we need to realize we have only one of 2 choices that we can make.

  1. Thank God eventually and then get the benefits of a grateful and humble heart.  Or
  2. You will be bitter, which will rob you of your relationship with God and other people.  If you have broken/no relationships you will become alone and depressed.

What is the truest treasure in this life – JESUS – Jesus because gives us the roadmap and opportunity to choose for a transformed heart.   Out of our heart flow our thoughts, words and actions.   These 3 determine their emotions.   Emotions are the essence of who we are. Our emotions/feelings fuel our energy and our decisions.  Happiness.

Love joy peacefulness

Galatians 5:13-14 (ESV)  For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”

Galatians 5:22    But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

  1. Humble yourself
  2. Love God
  3. Love others
  4. Rejoice in the trials of life

The best possible life for my kids requires the best possible heart in my kids.

“If your heart is unhealthy, it threatens everything else—family, friends, career—everything!”  MICHAEL HYATT
